Silvio Berlusconi Makes It Easier To Sue Italian Judges

Berlusconi’s cabinet has approved a bill that would allow defendants to sue judges and prosecutors for making mistakes. The bill would also change aspects of the Italian legal system that some people think make it biased toward the prosecution — but opponents think it’s Berlusconi’s way of getting back at prosecutors he accuses of hounding him. Says the national magistrates’ association: “This is a punitive reform whose overall intention is to undermine the autonomy and independence of the judiciary and upset significantly the correct balance between the arms of government.”
