Taco Bell is Selling Taquitos Now, But No One is Calling Them Taquitos

In Depth

Taco Bell producing taquitos isn’t shocking; ultimately, it was really a matter of time. In a weird move, though, neither the company nor the media sources reporting on it are willing to actually call it a taquito.

It makes some sense, at least, that Taco Bell would want to call it something else, in this case the Rolled Chicken Taco and Crunchy Taco (please note that “a crunchy rolled taco” is the textbook definition of a taquito). They’re designed specifically for dipping (sauces include Spicy Ranch, Salsa, Guacamole, Nacho Cheese and reduced-fat Sour Cream*) and they’re going to start selling them on November 20.

What makes significantly less sense is that, as they make clear in that link, USA Today apparently has no idea what a taquito is. They refer to the rolled chicken tacos as “equally wacky” as the waffle taco, which is a lot like saying a tire iron is as bizarre as Crispin Glover. I’m having some difficulty processing their reaction to this. I mean…that’s a taquito, right? Doesn’t anyone else notice that? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

* If you’re eating reduced-fat sour cream, why even bother? Reduced fat sour cream is on the same theoretical level as a Diet Big Mac — go big or go home. I feel the same way about Low Sodium Soy Sauce; screw your green-lidded container.
