As you may have heard, in just 5 days, we’ll be publishing our first book, a 300-page, hardcover, illustrated encyclopedia called The Book of Jezebel. In honor of this milestone —which took many years and dozens of contributors to execute—we’ll be posting one entry from the book a day, starting with “A” and continuing on through to “Z.” Although the book itself has already been printed — it’s gorgeous — questions, additions, annotations and suggestions on the entries that appear online are welcomed and encouraged.
Sex and the City
Cable television show that ran from 1998 to 2004, with a movie released in 2008 and a sequel released in 2010. Originally based on Candace Bushnell’s book and New York Observer column of the same name, the show soon took on a life of its own and became a global cultural phenomenon. Carrie Bradshaw, the show’s narrator, is a sex and relationship columnist who lives in Manhattan and spends most of her time dating various men and talking about her love life with her three friends, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. Once a week, she writes a column. In later seasons, the show also had a heavy focus on fashion, emphasizing Carrie’s love of expensive and impractical footwear. The show engendered both frenzied fandom and caustic criticism, and gallons of ink have been spilled debating whether or not the show is feminist, whether or not it’s good for women, and whether or not anyone should care either way. But one thing is for damn sure: the two Sex and the City movies are terrible. Especially the second one. Just totally, irredeemably terrible. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
