A picture of egg has done what mere mortals can only dream of achieving: it beat Kylie Jenner at social media.
According to Billboard, the egg photo in question is that of one pristine World Record Egg. Like most of us, its sole purpose on this earth is to rack up Instagram likes. Unlike most of us, though, it toppled a world record, garnering 20.6 million likes as of 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night. Jenner previously held the title, having racked up 18.1 million likes on an Instagram post from February 2018 announcing the birth of her and Travis Scott’s daughter, Stormi.
But it is a new year, and we have a new birth: The Egg.
Unlike Stormi, the Egg’s parentage is mostly a mystery. Buzzfeed News reports that the Egg account is run by “Henrietta,” a chicken from the British countryside, but Instagram requires smart phone technology, and I am not certain a Touch screen can recognize talons. (It is possible this scenario would work if the chicken had an iPad with an attached keyboard. I will ruminate on this further.)
Talons or not, “Henrietta” says the egg’s name is Eugene, and that the inspiration to put Eugene on the Internet was borne out of Drynuary boredom. Per Buzzfeed:
Henrietta said she decided to start the after “I stopped drinking for Dry January,” and said she was home last Friday night when she “read an article regarding the top 20 posts on insta, Kylie Jenner topped it with 18m.”
“I saw this as a challenge to beat it,” the Instagram creator wrote. “It was nothing personal.”
If that sounds nonsensical to you, then clearly you are not observing Drynuary, a booze-free month that has thus far inspired my roommate to KonMari our apartment at least twice. Now we have no water glasses, and I wish she’d dreamed up this egg instead.
