Stars like Kim Kardashian, Dana Delany, and Lisa Rinna are becoming part of a trend: it’s now okay to admit that you had plastic surgery, and that you hated it.
ABC’s Andrea Canning, Kelly Hagan, and Raquel Hecker present a panoply of plastic surgery regrets. Dana Delany had a Botox injection that killed a nerve in her forehead, causing her eye to droop. Lisa Rinna recently had her silicone lip plumping reversed. And Kim Kardashian says she was upset about the side effect of her Botox: “I think when you’re young there are other ways you can look after your skin. Botox just wasn’t necessary for me at this age.”
Of course, it would be nice if we lived in a world where no one felt Botox was necessary, regardless of age, but it is interesting to see actresses going public about their crappy plastic surgery. This kind of thing used to be more hush-hush, with stars keeping quiet (with the exception of Tara Reid) while websites like AwfulPlasticSurgery.com shamed them. But perhaps inspired by Heidi Montag’s all-too-public plastic surgery drama, its now becoming a little more okay for stars to talk about what they’ve done to their faces.
It hasn’t really become okay for them to age, though, or gain weight, and the message we seem to be getting now is less about self-acceptance than about not having a crappy surgeon. Acknowledging potential side effects is a step in the right direction — at least we’re being open about the fact that the procedures often dictated by Hollywood beauty standards are more invasive and serious than a swipe of makeup. On its own, though, that revelation isn’t going to broaden those beauty standards — it might just privilege those who either are 22 or whose plastic surgery looks extremely “natural.” It’s also worth noting that few A-listers have come forward about bad plastic surgery, perhaps because they have too much to lose. The only thing that would really stop the Botox train would be stars getting work even if they haven’t had work done — if directors and studio execs had the courage to make this happen, they’d do all of us a big favor.
