Kim Davis Wannabe Will Not Grant Licenses 'to Engage in Sodomy'

In Depth

On Wednesday, Alabama Probate Judge Nick Williams came out as an active member of the Kim Davis Party For Christian Religious Freedom when he asked the state’s Supreme Court for an order that would allow him to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

“The jailing of Kentucky clerk Kimberly B. Davis put at immediate risk the liberty interest of all faithful and religiously sincere public officials in Alabama whose office has responsibility for making decisions as to whether to give sanction and honor to homosexual relationships to include the issuance of a license to engage in sodomy,” read a petition filed on his behalf. reports:

Williams has been among more than a half dozen probate judges — of 67 — in Alabama who have refused to issue any marriage licenses to either same-sex or opposite-sex couples…
Williams states he wants the Alabama Supreme Court to issue an order declaring that its March 3 ruling — prior to the U.S. Supreme Court’s order — that Alabama’s ban on gay marriage was still in effect and probate judges were not to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. He also requests a ruling declaring the free exercise for himself and others like him —including employees of probate courts — under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Alabama’s Religious Freedom Amendment.

Basically, Williams is like, ‘I don’t like this new rule and I’m cranky and my diaper is poopy.’ And it’s crazy just because I honestly didn’t know that anyone named Nick was allowed to be a bigot.

“Needless to say from our perspective, this is a dying gasp of a probate judge,” said Randall Marshall, the legal director for the ACLU of Alabama in an interview with “If public officials don’t want to do their jobs then they don’t need to be public officials.”
