Love and Hip Hop franchise creator Mona Scott-Young is in hot water with African American fraternities and sororities over a new show pitch.
Last week, the entertainment industry veteran posted a teaser for an upcoming reality show called Sorority Sisters, featuring members of each black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho. Days later, according to Vibe Vixen, the trailer was removed from the web and a petition against the show popped up on MoveOn.org called “End: Mona Scott-Young’s ‘Sorority Sisters’ Show.” At press time, 20,258 people signed up to hate Scott-Young.
I imagine Scott-Young also received a cease and desist letter because the Sorority Sisters trailer is gone and I can’t even find the original clip. Sadly, between defending Love and Hip Hop‘s porn tapes and clock-work fights during her appearance on The View on Monday, Scott-Young never mentioned her tiff with the black greeks.
Historically, like a James Brown sample, it’s not easy to obtain clearance from black greeks to use their letters or likeness in film or television. Look closely at the shows you’ve seen centered around black colleges and universities, people maybe dressed in a frat or sorority’s colors or replicating their step routines but rarely are they sporting the official clothing of, say, Delta Sigma Theta or Omega Psi Phi. Still, considering Love and Hip Hop‘s content and how many think the show is the very destruction of all that is young, gifted and black — I don’t, it’s bad and I refuse to watch it but I’ll reserve my culture crushing judgement for the prison industrial complex, the continued denial of reparations and America’s addiction to firearms — I can see how black greeks might not warm to Scott’s idea. I mean, I’m sure someone would love to watch black greek step shows devolve into brawls involving gold boots, flying red and white canes and screeching women in pink… but I’d rather not.Image via Getty.
