GOP Politician Blames Divorces On Women Who Love Their Kids Too Much

Ladies! It’s time for another edition of “Everything is Your Fucking Fault,” this time brought to you by a GOP candidate in South Carolina.

Pastor Det Bowers is running against Lindsey Graham in the Republican Senate primary in South Carolina. He once said in a sermon that divorces were mostly caused by women because they love their children too much which causes their husbands to cheat. Or some damn thing. I could have just typed GOBBLEDY GOO GOO POO WOO and it would make more sense than this bullshit.

POLITICO unearthed the sermon from 2001:

During a sermon on the Book of Peter delivered at the Christ Church of the Carolinas, Bowers said it was an “abominable idolatry” when wives love their children more than their husbands, arguing that’s what causes divorces most of the time. He added that in the “vast preponderance” of situations where men are adulterous, women are to blame because they have showered too much emotion on their children instead of their husbands.
“And yet, I find that in about 95 percent of broken marriages, though the husband’s the one that ran out on his wife, the wife loves her children more than she does her husband,” Bowers said in an audio recording obtained by POLITICO. “That is an abominable idolatry.”

But wait it actually gets even better. “Do you hear me ladies?” the pastor said during the sermon, with his voice rising. “It is an abominable idolatry to love your children more than you love your husband, and it will ruin your marriage.”

Right, that’s how love works. Each person in your life gets a measurable amount and then you have to weigh it on the super special Love Scale. That’s how your friends and family can find out how much you love them and which people they have to start plotting against because you love them more.

“And yet you blame it on him because he ran off with some other woman!” the pastor said.

Yes, you stupid wife with the philandering husband! How dare you blame him for running off with with his 20-year-old aromatherapist? You ruined his life by loving his kids too much.

“He did run off with some other woman, and you packed his bags. All of his emotional bags, you packed for him. Is that true in every case? No, but it’s true in the vast preponderance of them. You just ran him off. You paid more attention to your children than you did to him,” he said. “‘Oh, he doesn’t need me?’ He needs you more than they do. He chose you, they didn’t. An abominable idolatry.”

Are we sure this guy is an actual Christian? Can we double check? It’s OK. I’ll wait.

From August 2000 until May 2012, Bowers was a pastor at the Columbia, S.C.-based Christ Church of the Carolinas. He is a non-denominational Christian.

Wow. In a statement to Politico, Bowers said the sermon was a reflection of what he learned counseling married couples. Oh my God, this guy counseled people? Holy shit. That’s like asking Joffrey Baratheon to help set PETA policies. Do. Not. Want.

Here’s the full sermon for those of you who are trapped on Ceti Alpha V and need a good substitute for one of those horrifying brain-burrowing slug things to use to torture someone:
