This Slip Might Be the Best $18 I Ever Spent

Latest

Much unlike many a magazine editor who recommends you buy all sorts of crap that they most likely got for free, your Jezebel staff doesn’t get jack shit (other than books, unsolicited). And that’s how it should be. But on our own time, in our personal lives, we still buy stuff. So this is Worth It, our recommendation of random things that we’ve actually spent our own money on. These are the things we buy regularly or really like, things we’d actually tell our friends about. And now we’re telling you.

Look, I know it doesn’t look like much. It’s not fancy schmancy expensive silk lingerie. But this full slip is one of the best things I’ve ever bought for myself. I work at home in the mornings — from about 7:30am until 11am or so — and at least one day a week. During this time, I prefer not to be wearing street clothes. When I come home from work, the first thing I like to do is take off my street clothes. When I’m working at home or lounging around the house, I want to be comfortable. But after years of wearing pajamas and yoga pants and sweatpants, I looked in the mirror one day and felt gross. I’m the kind of gal whose favorite color is silver. I’m the kind of gal who likes champagne, film noir and glitter nail polish. What the fuck was I doing in yoga pants? Also, when the FedEx guy or Thai food guy comes, I feel like a Dude™-esque unemployed slob instead of a hard-working attempting-to-be-pseudo-glamorous writer. Inspired by Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Liz Taylor in Butterfield 8, and, yes, Lindsay Lohan in Liz & Dick, I decided that a full slip would be perfect for morning writing, lying on the couch and watching old Veronica Mars episodes. If I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I’d think awww yeah. If the UPS guy buzzed, I’d throw on a cashmere cardigan (already part of my daily uniform) and be that sexy/mysterious lady of leisure instead of the unkempt hobo chick.

That said, I wasn’t willing to spend a whole lot on my lounge wear. After a little Googling, I saw this Dixie Belle slip at the YES YES BUY ME NOW price of $17.95. Sold. And it is pretty awesome. It’s nylon tricot — synthetic, but pretty silky and light against the skin. I got it in black, and it’s just comfortable. Yoga pants-level comfort, but without the oh, so you’ve just given up on life aura. I will probably regret posting this image but that’s me over there on the left. My bedroom is a mess, but this is about pure Hollywood glamour and a little self esteem boost for a measly eighteen bucks! I dig it. Worth it.
