A trans woman from Cincinnati, Ohio who was found murdered Thursday morning has been identified and becomes the fourth trans woman murdered in Ohio in the last eighteen months, and the fourth this month nation-wide.
Although she has been identified with her male name and with male pronouns by local media, her gender identity not mentioned, LGBTQNation is reporting that Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization or BRAVO said the victim identified as Tiff or Tiffany Edwards.
The LGBTQNation report also identified the three other transgender woman, two of them of color, who have previously been murdered in Ohio:
Cemia “CeCe” Dove, 20, was killed in January 2013 and her body was found three months later in a pond outside Cleveland. Andrey Bridges, 36, was convicted in November and sentenced to life in prison.
Betty Skinner, 52, was found dead in her Cleveland apartment in December by a home health worker.
Brittany Stergis, 22, was found dead in a car in Cleveland, also in December. She had been shot to death. Delshawn Carroll, 19, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder earlier this month.
The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs found that transgender people constituted 50% of the hate crime motivated murders of LGBT people, and people of color are the victims in 75% of the hate crime motivated murders. The intersection between gender identity and race means that while white transgender individuals are still far more likely to be the victim of a hate crime, especially a hate crime murder, than their white cisgender peers, transgender people of color are far likelier still.
