See, Coulter explained to O’Reilly, Paladino wasn’t talking about all gay people when he told an audience in Williamsburg, “I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option – it isn’t.” Just those “gay left-wing activists.”
Apparently believing that your life is just as “valid and successful” as someone else’s makes you an activist — and also totally fair game for homophobic hate. Maybe Coulter’s just mad that
some saw her speaking at a convention for gay conservatives as a dilution of her usual insanity (though
saying, “Marriage is not a civil right. You’re not black” certainly kept the crazy flowing). Whatever the case, it’s always scary when
Bill O’Reilly is the reasonable guy in the room, which often seems to happen when Ann Coulter
comes around. I now think her purpose as a Fox News guest is to bear out the network’s “fair and balanced” tagline — which O’Reilly helpfully reiterates — by balancing “merely wrong” with “totally fucking nuts.”
