Francis Bean Isn't Impressed With Lana Del Rey's Suicidal Act
LatestLana Del Rey took her profitable act of sad core Americana too far recently and said she wished she was dead. Maybe acting sad all the time actually makes the singer unhappy, or maybe that too is all a charade. Who knows, but what is clear is that Frances Bean, daughter of Kurt Cobain, one of Del Rey’s fallen heroes, isn’t impressed with her death worship.
In an interview with The Guardian, Del Rey was asked why she thinks all of her musical icons are dead like Cobain and Amy Winehouse and why death at a young age is so attractive to her. Here is an except, which journalist Tim Jonze backs up with audio from their chat, which we broke down on Friday.
“I wish I was dead already,” Lana Del Rey says, catching me off guard. She has been talking about the heroes she and her boyfriend share – Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain among them – when I point out that what links them is death and ask if she sees an early death as glamorous. “I don’t know. Ummm, yeah.” And then the death wish.
Don’t say that, I say instinctively.
“But I do.”
You don’t!
“I do! I don’t want to have to keep doing this. But I am.”
Do what? Make music?
“Everything. That’s just how I feel. If it wasn’t that way, then I wouldn’t say it. I would be scared if I knew [death] was coming, but …”
When her feature appeared with the dead quote in the first graph, Del Rey probably thought to herself, ‘Oh fuck.’ Then she hit Twitter to denounce the article and the author and accuse him of being a “masked” fan.
The thing is, if you listen to the audio, Jonze gives the singer numerous chances to retract or redefine her suicidal statement, but in true artist form, she only confirmed her stance. Later when she saw her quotes in black and white, Del Rey probably realized how careless she sounded and tried to blame-backpedal. But by then, her death-happy statements had swirled around the Internet and reached Francis Bean, who wasn’t impressed by Del Rey death-obsessed poser act because she’s a kid who misses her father who died too soon, Nirvana or not. Bean then tweeted the following (via Stereogum) which she’s since deleted:
“I’ll never know my father because he died young. It becomes a desirable feat because ppl like u think it’s ’cool.’ Well, it’s fucking not. Embrace life, because u only get one life. The ppl u mentioned wasted that life. Don’t be 1 of those ppl ur too talented to waste it away.”
Ultimately, del Rey looks like the idiot in this scenario but she’s not that different than other entertainers who say salacious things in the moment, only to regret them later. As for Francis Bean’s response, it has to suck being the child of someone so talented and universally idolized over by strangers. At the end of the day, she’s just a girl who misses her father.
