We’re not the only ones who have issues with the roles for women in Hollywood: Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel grace Maire Claire‘s March cover, and inside, they talk about how they’re usually the only women on set:
The ladies became BFFs while shooting the craptastic-looking Valentine’s Day, and Jennifer Garner says:
“We don’t work with a lot of women on our films. And I haven’t worked much at all lately, to tell you the truth… But when I do work, it’s always one woman and a bunch of men in my casts — maybe my character has a friend in the script, but not always. It’s odd.” She continues: “So on this film, it was great to have someone like Jessica around, even though most of our scenes as best friends were over the phone.”
We’ve often written about how few movies follow the Bechdel Rule — in which the story features (1) at least two women who (2) talk to each other (3) about something other than a man. But while our frustration comes from a place of trying to enjoy movies, it’s interesting to see that the women working on the films also feel annoyed.
Jessica Biel also commented on the subject: “And do you find this true, Jennifer? I know I do: You never really bond with all the guys in your cast like they do with each other.” Sounds like it kind of sucks. But maybe a large salary and a dose of glamor make up for a testosterone-driven work environment?
