A few weeks ago it looked like Rihanna and Drake might have been rekindling their love. That possibility has grown stronger with each passing oh nah nah, what’s my name? week.
Back in September, Drake told Ellen of Rihanna, “Yeah, we had our moment and I’ll always support and have love for her” but “I’m not into do-overs in any way,” making it seem like a reconciliation between these friends-who-once-fucked was unlikely. Around that time, it was also reported that Drake and Chris Brown had gotten over their long history of RiRi-instigated brawls. Then in November, Rihanna and Drake were seen at a club together in Texas. Okay, innocuous enough: according to a man loudly complaining in my local liquor store Friday evening, it’s hard to find good Ciroc these days.
But in early February, the pair dealt with the nonexistent California cold by hanging out at a different club in West Hollywood. Shortly after that, Rihanna joined Drake on tour in Paris and performed “Take Care” with him. Then they were in Amsterdam. Then Rihanna was spotted dancing at Drake’s show in Brussels. And now, here she is, eating dinner with him at Nobu in London on Sunday night. As someone who has witnessed Drake when he was on a date quite recently, I can attest that a. this is definitely an outfit Drake would wear on a date and b. Nobu is such a casual Sunday Night on a Date with Drake restaurant.
In a Rolling Stone interview that came out in February, Drake said of Rihanna:
“She’s the ultimate fantasy. I mean, I think about it. Like, ‘Man, that would be good.’ We have fun together, she’s cool and shit. But we’re just friends. That’s my dog for life.” He says he doesn’t have a girlfriend. “I’m not after pussy like I was three years ago, when I was trying to make up for all the years when no girl would talk to me,” he says. “But I haven’t met somebody that makes everybody else not matter.”
Drake’s assertion that he’s single would stack up with the recent rumors that he’s been seeing other women while on tour. “The only commitment they want is to be able to keep what they have and not ruin a good thing,” a source told Hollywood Life. “Neither of them are in a rush for anything. They are so chill and love what they’ve got.” In this instance, a chill relationship = someone who has a propensity for weed + someone who knows they could be with their ultimate fantasy but they’re not dwelling on it because there are bigger things to worry about, like how it would all be so simple if we could just get some head in a comfortable bed. And anyway, she just wants to smoke and fuck and that’s all that we do. So. It’s all good.
