Jennifer Aniston got honest about the media’s fixation on her womb because, like, why are strangers so worried about her vagina and its productivity rate? That’s a valid question for one of Hollywood’s biggest names.
On Wednesday, Aniston sat down with Carson Daly on Today and spoke about her interview with Gloria Steinem during the Makers Conference earlier this year. Notice how Us Weekly references Aniston in the following transcription of Aniston’s chat.
“I’d talked to her personally about this for a while, just because it is such an issue of, like, ‘Are you married yet? Are you going to have your babies yet?'” Aniston explained to Daly. (The star has been engaged to Justin Theroux since summer 2012.)
“I don’t have this sort of checklist of things that have to be done, and…if they’re not checked, then I’ve failed some part of my feminism or my being a woman or my worth and my value as a woman because I haven’t birthed a child,” Brad Pitt’s ex-wife continued. “I’ve birthed a lot of things, and I feel like I’ve mothered many things,” she said. “And I don’t feel like it’s fair to put that pressure on people.”
I know the celebrity magazine often refers to its subject by their relationship status and history but this last graph illustrates Aniston’s point pretty well. She’s not quoted as Jennifer Aniston, she’s identified as Brad Pitt’s ex. Womp. When Daly went for the empathetic question, ‘Why do you think people who don’t know you care so much [about your womb’s social calendar]?’ Aniston answered,
“If you have an answer to that, please let me know. I don’t know.”
Antiquated gender roles and stereotypes? Just taking a stab at it.
