The Federal Transit Authority has proposed raising the average weight per passenger used to calculate bus safety rules from 150 pounds to 175 pounds, and allowing an extra quarter of a square foot of floor space for each rider. The current guides for how many passengers can safety squeeze onto a bus are based on statistics from 1960-62, and the agency says it needs “to acknowledge the expanding girth of the average passenger.”
