People Actually Named Their Kids Kale This Year

According to the Social Security Administration, not only is Brooklyn a popular thing that has become a name thing now, but that leafy green vegetable your old roommate was far too fond of is as well.

Bon Appétit did some dangerous digging through the numbers and found out that in so far in 2013, 262 people named their children Kale. Of those 262 Kales, 257 were boys. Though this news is confusing and upsetting, it shouldn’t be. Things change, faster than we would like.

FLASHBACK: the year is 2004. Kate is in her high school American history class. The substitute teacher everyone refers to as Grandpa Joe because he looks like Grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory accidentally calls her Kale instead of Kate during roll call. Uproarious laughter fills the room. The idea that someone could be named after an unpopular vegetable is uproariously funny to the teens present. Little did they know…
