We're Getting Legally Blonde 3, Why the Elle Not

Latest

Even though Legally Blonde 3 already exists, it appears that slightly more legitimate plans are in the works for film’s official third installment. This one will actually feature Reese Witherspoon, and include many of the original screenwriters and producers that made the first movie such a smash hit back in the salad days of a pre-9/11 2001.

According to Deadline, Witherspoon is currently in talks with MGM about reprising her role, along with writers Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, as well as producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. For the sake of optimism, we’ll assume Witherspoon has grown since she allowed herself to be associated with that low-budget fright that somehow included the line “Goldilocks make Justin-Bear happy” in the trailer. Here’s some vague information about the plot, courtesy of Deadline:

They are keeping the plot under wraps, but I’m told it will be much in the spirit of the first film, in which Woods’ idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe prevailed over the cynicism and snootiness all around her after the freshly dumped former sorority sister heads to law school. The sequel brought her to D.C. to join the staff of a congresswoman to pass a bill to ban animal testing. The intention here is to make this more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture. The feeling is to draw back in the audience that grew up with the original film and find a new global audience.

I foresee Elle Woods campaigning to become the first woman president, which will either hit the right, lighthearted notes, or make me want to swim into a boat propeller.
