American Apparel Adds First Female to Its Board of Directors
LatestA month after its founder Dov Charney was suspended for misconduct, American Apparel has appointed new directors to its board, and for the first time one of them is a woman.
Colleen Brown was one of four new directors named to the board yesterday.
Brown has had a long career in the media industry. She served as CEO of Fisher Communications Inc., a group of television and radio stations, for eight years through 2013. She led the sale of the company to Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. last year for about $340 million.
The troubled clothing chain has experienced a spate of bad PR resulting from numerous sexual harassment lawsuits brought upon Charney by former employees. The company has also lost $270 million since 2010. Although Charney was suspended for misconduct last month (“for misusing company funds and assets and retaliating against a former employee who sued him for harassment”) he is staying on at the company as a “strategic consultant” while under an investigation by an independent board committee.
