America's Most Romantic City Is… San Antonio?
LatestValentine’s Day is right around the corner! Is your city populated by poetry-slinging Casanovas or candy-heart-hating love-is-dead types? If only there were some way to find out, using the power of the Internet.
Oh, wait—Time says they’ve got the answer. According to a recent study, the most “romantic” cities in America are San Antonio, Seattle, Knoxville, Miami, and Alexandria, Virginia. Also appearing in the top 20: Cincinnati, Clearwater and Las Vegas. Because nothing says love like blackjack and the movie Casino!
If you dig a little deeper, though, the methodology is quite questionable. The rankings were drawn up by Amazon, based on what kinds of crap residents are ordering:
Amazon looked at cities with more than 100,000 residents and compiled data on the romantic products they bought, including romance novels and relationship books, romantic comedy movies, romantic music, as well as sales of sexual wellness products.
“We measured sales by units of romantic comedies, albums and romance books and pulled it together to create a complete list of the biggest purchasers by unit. We applied that data per capita for each city to determine which cities were the biggest purchasers of romantic titles,” explained an Amazon spokesperson.
Sure, that could mean you’re a dyed-in-the-wool romantic. Or it could just mean you love Josh Groban CDs and lube is your go-to stocking stuffer. DON’T LABEL ME, AMAZON.
