Former Miss Spain Becomes First Openly Gay National Beauty Queen

Latest

Patricia Yurena, Miss Spain in 2008 and 2013, has come out as lesbian after posting an intimate photo of herself with her girlfriend, singer/Spanish house DJ Vanesa Cortes. How exciting!

Yurena posted the cute photo of the couple last week with the caption “Romeo and Julliet,” (along with the three wise monkey emojis) and received an outpour of support from her fans. New York Daily News reports:

“I don’t regret what I did and I did it because I am happy about what’s going on in my life,” the 24-year old told La Opinion de Tenerife about making the photos public.

The 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow (of which Yurena was a runner up) drew sharp criticism from LGBT proponents due to Russia’s anti-gay laws. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, owner of the Miss Universe Organization’s “evolving” and “fair” views on gay marriage consists of supporting “traditional marriage,” telling MSNBC host Thomas Roberts in 2013, “I am for traditional marriage, I am for a marriage between a man and a woman.” But that guy is a tool anyway.

It’s cool to see some change, even if it’s within a seedy organization that values women how good they look in a swimsuit. But honestly, I’m just happy for Yurena and Cortes.
