Jordan Peele Will Help Tell the Story of Lorena Bobbitt for Amazon

Entertainment

Amazon is developing a series about one of the most recognized names in news, slash the world, Lorena Bobbitt, and none other than Jordan Peele is involved.

The story will be presented as a four-part docu-series titled Lorena, with Bobbitt’s full participation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peele is co-executive-producing the project through his company Monkeypaw Productions. In a statement, Peele said the series will attempt to ground a serious story of domestic abuse that was quickly turned into a penis punchline:

“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt,’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full-blown media spectacle,” said Peele. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story, and we’re honored to help her tell it.”

File this under scandal nostalgia—yet another project that refurbishes an old scandal for new consumption. The series will be directed by Joshua Rofe, who told Deadline, “Our hope for this series is to give viewers pause when the next scandal of the moment is presented to us as macabre entertainment. Often, there’s profound pain and trauma just beneath the surface of stories like Lorena’s.”

Lorena is the latest addition to Peele’s growing list of compelling projects, including the Nazi-killing drama The Hunt, an HBO horror series about the Jim Crow-era, and an upcoming Black Klansman film with Spike Lee.
