Shockingly, Liking Nickelback Will Not Get You Laid
LatestIf you like Nickelback, and you like dating, it’s time to start lying on your profile. One dating site says admitting to a love for the band is a dealbreaker for many daters.
The dating site Tastebuds.fm asked 1,600 users for their biggest “musical turnoff.” Nickelback led the pack, followed closely by Justin Bieber. The rest of the top 10: Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Coldplay, U2, Creed, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne and Britney Spears.
Interestingly, men and women seemed more inclined to turn against same-gender acts. Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj appeared in women’s top 20 turnoffs but not in men’s, while dudes were more likely to despise Oasis, Mumford and Sons, Kings of Leon, Eminem and Kanye West. It’s surprising that guys still expend energy hating Oasis — and what’s wrong with Nicki Minaj? But perhaps more interesting is the fact that men and women are turned off by pop stars who share their gender. Part of it may have to do with the sexualization of said pop stars — even if they don’t have particularly sexy images (cf. Kings of Leon), popular music acts are supposed to be heartthrobs. And that may be annoying for folks whose hearts do not throb at their musical stylings or their artfully disheveled hair. Maybe there’s an element of jealousy in music turnoffs — though in the case of Nickelback, it just seems like common sense.
