TLC Claims Not To Be 'Making Light' Of Virgins, Despite Silly Music

Latest

Monday we suggested TLC was exploiting adults who have never had sex in the special program Virgin Diaries. Today, the network’s west coast vice president of production, Timothy Kuryak, tells ABC news:

“We’re not trying to make light of this or treat it in a sort of trivial way. We want to document these peoples’ stories and why they make this decision.”

Not trying to make light? Then what’s with the silly carnival music in the promo? Come on, dude. You guys know exactly what you’re doing. It might not be Littlest Groom-level spectacle, but your network has begun focusing on oddities, from the Duggars to Sister Wives and Toddlers & Tiaras. Throwing virgins into the mix alleges that they are unusual and to be ogled, like extreme couponers or the ladies on I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant.

Kuryak also says: “A lot of stories about later in life virgins talk about it like a problem… We want to show that this is something that can be celebrated.” We’ll have to wait and see how the network handles the people featured in the special — they’ve done a good, respectful job with All-American Muslim so far — but seriously, how is that music not making “light” of that kiss?
