The official earthquake death toll has passed 8,000 and more than 12,000 people are still missing, but a dramatic rescue shown on Japan’s NHK television has given many hope that their loved ones may still be found. On Sunday in Ishinomaki, 16-year-old Jin Abe called out for help from the rubble of his home, and told rescue workers his 80-year-old grandmother Sumi Abe was trapped inside. The two survived on food they had in the refrigerator, but it took the teen nine days to crawl out of the building. They were both taken to the hospital, where they were reunited with Jin’s father, who told reporters, “I always believed they were alive.”
