Have you been feeling like you should probably pay someone to slice off part of your labia so you can conform to some 100% arbitrary “ideal crotch region” beauty standard that only matters to shitheads and 15-year-old boys whose entire understanding of sex comes from internet porn? Well, you’re not alone!
Labia reduction surgery is more popular than ever, according to some plastic surgery company, and the women most likely to request it are between the ages of 18 and 24.
Via The National Student:
The report, compiled from enquiries made over the last four years, reveals that Transform has received on average 1,150 labia reduction requests each year from 18-24 year olds – more than any other age group.
The clinic has revealed that the top surgical enquiries for those 18-24 years of age are:
1. Boob job
2. Nose job
3. Liposuction
4. Tummy tuck
5. Breast reduction
…The upsurge in ‘designer vagina’ enquiries is being attributed to “unrealistic representations of female genitalia in pornographic materials.”
I’ve written before about how shaming and mocking women who’ve had plastic surgery is pointless, short-sighted, and cruel. If you really fucking hate your labia and plastic surgery makes you feel like you can finally live a life unimpeded by shame and self-doubt, who am I to tell you what to do with your body? GO NUTS, GIRL. LYLAS.
But meanwhile, we can still criticize the shit out of a culture that teaches women that tiny flaps of skin on their genitals have any bearing whatsoever on their worth as human beings—and then charges them extravagantly to “fix” themselves. BOOOOO.
