David! Pecker!
Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today:
- Grabbing my popcorn/sobbing over the state of our democracy: “David Pecker, the chief executive of the company that publishes the National Enquirer, was granted immunity by federal prosecutors for providing information about Michael Cohen and President Trump in the criminal investigation into hush-money payments for two women during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to people familiar with the matter.” [Wall Street Journal]
- And we learned today that two senior Trump Organization executives were also involved in the payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. [New York Times]
- Lots of Paul Manafort news today: Only one juror didn’t think Manafort was guilty on all counts, leading the judge to declare a mistrial on 10 of the 18 counts. Despite it all, Donald Trump still “respects” Manafort: “I would say what he did, some of the charges they threw against him, every consultant, every lobbyist in Washington probably does.” Honestly, probably true? [The Guardian/Politico]
- Omarosa’s tell-all Unhinged is now a New York Times bestseller. 🙁 [The Hill]
- There was some drama on a conservative email listserv over…racism! [Politico]
- In not-really-new news, Donald Trump is a fan of white supremacists. [The Hill]
- Prisoners in at least 17 states are on strike this week, in protest of their dire living conditions and forced prison labor. [New York Magazine]
- Reality Winner, the former government contractor turned whistleblower, was sentenced to a five-year prison term. Damn. [CBS News]
- Oil companies, some of the major contributors to climate change, now want the federal government to spend billions of dollars to protect their facilities from…the effects of climate change. [AP]
Here are some tweets the president was allowed to publish today:
