Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber Desperately Want to Be Memes

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber are vying for the song of the summer with a new single about… social anxiety? The premise of their new music video for “I Don’t Care” is that Sheeran and Bieber don’t care, in fact, about making the video, so it’s intentionally rough around the edges.

For one, Sheeran and Bieber are green-screened next to a pool with women (another classic music video staple: pools), but you can tell they’re really in a studio, and for some reason, the women are wearing horse masks. Sheeran and Bieber wear many costumes throughout, are zapped into psychedelic landscapes, and at one point, get married. Let’s “dive” in.

:

Sheeran sings, “I’m at a party I don’t want to be at/And I don’t ever wear a suit and tie.”

:

The panda suit is clearly a metaphor for how awkward Sheeran feels in the moment, and incidentally, how awkward I feel watching the video.

:

The sight of Sheeran in a bathrobe make me confront the uncomfortable fact that he maybe hasn’t seen the sun in days.

:

Now we’re by a pool. Maybe the girls with horse masks also don’t want to be there.

:

Ed arrives, in case you were worried.

:

So many Eds.

:

Justin’s here, and he’s shirtless. Notice how Ed’s shoes just kind of disappear into the table holding all those towels.

:

What’s with this trend of pop stars wearing full-body food and beverage costumes?

:

Both of these faces are me.

:

I like this one, actually, no complaints.

:

And this one.

:

Green screen time.

:

It’s all fake! A commentary on the culture(?).

:

Sheeran marries the old Bieber.

:

These stop making any kind of sense after a while, so here are some of my favorites:

The last one is me, blogging.
