The Next Hot Dutch Import? A Feminist Porn Channel

Latest

Setting aside for a moment the actual merits of porn that bills itself as feminist, wouldn’t it be nice if some progressive company from, say, the Netherlands created a channel of sexy movies that weren’t filled with spray-tanned cyborgs waving their aggressively groomed genitals at each other and saying things like, “Oooo, yeah, spit in my mouth!”? You’ll get to decide for yourself just as soon as Dusk!, a lady-oriented erotic digital channel from the Netherlands, comes all over the U.S. sometime in the spring or summer.

Dusk! offers an visual stimulation alternative for people who want to watch real(ish) people having sex on camera without all the razzle dazzle of the U.S. porn industry. This is porn for the more thoughtful and leisurely porn viewer who doesn’t just masturbate on-the-go while streaming YouPorn on an iPhone in a Denny’s bathroom, or something. Americans are so crass and filthy. Maybe they don’t really deserve Dusk!, no matter how cool it sounds:

Dusk! TV, a female-oriented, erotic digital TV channel based in the Netherlands, is coming to the U.S. in the spring or early summer. Tune in and you’ll only find “porna”—films geared toward women, made with respect, featuring “real” people, and chosen by about 2,000 women who contribute to a research test panel.
The premise of the channel is that you (women) decide what porn for women is, says Yvette Luhrs, program manager and porna researcher for Dusk! “We hope to serve an audience who’s not into classic male-oriented pornography but is looking for erotic film,” she says. “We want to create easier access to different representations of sexuality for a bigger audience.”

The market for porn that isn’t super degrading and gross is definitely growing, though some people have raised serious ethical issues with how some amateur porn that insists on offering a real alternative to mainstream porn is still exploitative. Dusk! isn’t amateur porn — it’s “ethically produced” and made for women, purportedly offering a view of human sexuality that hasn’t been distorted to resemble some hyper-muscled, smooth-genitaled alternate reality where people bang each other with the rhythm of broken woodworking machinery.
