There's Another Movie About Gay Conversion Therapy Coming

The first trailer for Boy Erased follows Jared Sykes (Lucas Hedges) as his parents Victor (Russell Crowe) and Nancy (Nicole Kidman) enroll him in a gay conversion therapy program. In it, we see Crowe, who plays a Southern Baptist preacher, address his son with the heartbreaking: “I love you, but we cannot see a way that you can live under this roof if you’re gonna fundamentally go against the grain of our beliefs,” after Hedges’ character reveals that he “thinks about men. I don’t know why.” Film critics are already calling the film Oscar-worthy.

The trailer could do without the overly dramatic, car-commercial ballad that soundtracks it, but I’m assuming we will all be basic and cry during this. Troye Sivan (with an American accent) and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers are in the movie, which is both nuts and a reason to watch.

Boy Erased is one of at least two films this year about gay conversation therapy—last week, the trailer for The Miseducation of Cameron Post premiered, starring Chloë Grace Moretz as a queer teen sent to a “treatment center” called God’s Promise. The movie took home the grand jury prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
