On Tuesday, Miley Cyrus teamed up with frequent collaborator Mark Ronson, to cover her buddy Ariana Grande’s hit song “No Tears Left to Cry” in a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance which is sure to incite many a comparison.

Grande and Cyrus have performed together several times in the past—most recently in June 2017 at Grande’s One Love Manchester Benefit Concert to support victims of the Manchester bombing and their families. In the past weeks the two have swapped supportive comments on social media. Here’s Cyrus’s tribute to Grande’s work:

And here’s Ariana performing her song live.

While I enjoy the deep, toasty quality of Cyrus’s voice, the vocals are too crisp for my taste, at least compared to the original. I don’t need to understand exactly what Grande is saying to feel the oceanic pull of her exhausted pain. Cyrus’s eerily animatronic ability to stop-and-start her voice on a dime doesn’t square with the dreamy pop quality I crave. Nonetheless, she clearly does a wonderful job, and I’ve listened to Grande’s version about a hundred times so I admittedly have very little room to grow on this issue.
