If you and your crocheted nipple tassels are not heading to Coachella this weekend, you can still catch Donald Glover and Rihanna’s top-secret “tropical thriller” Guava Island from the comfort of your darkened apartment.
Glover confirmed the movie will premiere on Amazon Prime (for free) at precisely 12:01 a.m. PT, where it will be available for 18 hours. It will also stream on Twitch at 5 p.m. PT on Saturday; the same time it will be on Coachella’s YouTube channel.
Shot mostly in Havana, Cuba, the film was written by Glover’s brother, Stephen, and directed by regular Glover collaborator Hiro Murai. Its description reads: “On Guava Island, a local musician is determined to throw a festival for everyone to enjoy.” Vanity Fair reported that it was inspired by City of God and Purple Rain. Nonso Anozie and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright are in it as well.
Otherwise, not much is known about the film, beyond this very tiny teaser trailer. Even Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, wasn’t totally sure what she was signing up for when she committed to distributing the film based on a four-minute sizzle reel.
“I would have committed to Donald sight unseen.” she said previously. “I knew whatever he wanted to amplify would have relevance and be entertaining. He has that ability to create cultural moments and spread a message that’s interesting.”
She’s got a point. After all, it’s Glover and Rihanna, bashing around Havana! See you jerks online on Sunday.
