Jane Lynch on Being a Gay Kid: 'It Was Almost Like I Had a Disease'

In a new web series, It Got Better, Jane Lynch described her personal journey from closeted gay kid to highly visible gay celebrity. It wasn’t easy.

Lynch grew up in Dolton, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, and says she was considered different from a very young age.
“It was almost like I had a disease I had been diagnosed. I had a journal and … I remember I wrote, ‘I am gay. No one can ever know this.’ And I went four blocks away and threw it out in somebody else’s garbage,” she says. “It led to a life of secrecy that I had to unravel,” the actress and comedienne admits.
“I identified more with boy things. I enjoyed dressing like a boy,” she says. “The boys stopped wanting to play with me when I got to be about 10 and I had to fight to play baseball.”

Is Jane Lynch the greatest creature living or dead e’er to walk the earth INCLUDING JOHN GOODMAN? It’s possible. It certainly seems possible. And I do not joke about John Goodman. [E!]

Sandra Bullock gave an inspirational commencement speech at a New Orleans public high school. The theme was “things Sandra Bullock wished someone had told her when she was younger.”

“The first thing is stop worrying so much,” Bullock told the students. “Stop being scared of the unknown, because anything I worried about didn’t happen. Other stuff happened. The unknown we can’t do anything about.”
Bullock’s second word of advice was to “raise the bar higher.” She added, “It is noisy out there and for some reason, people want to see you fail. That’s not your problem, that is their problem. I only remember the moments where I tried beyond what I thought I could do and I do not remember the failures because I didn’t. Nothing’s a failure, it’s just not supposed to work out that way because something better is supposed to come along.”
“The third thing we work on [is] at home is in the morning,” the actress shared. “We turn on the music really really loud before we leave the house. And the rule is, you have to dance a little bit before you step out in the world, because it changes the way you walk.”
Additional funny words of advice included eating “something green every day with every meal” and “do not pick your nose in public.”
On a more serious note, the actress told the grads to embrace their loved ones whenever possible. “When someone who cares about you hugs you?” Bullock said, “Hug them back with two arms.”
